How to Reset an HP Inkjet Cartridge

Step 1
Insert the cartridge you refilled into the HP printer. Have the printer print an alignment page, thus recognizing the cartridge. The printer will still read the ink level as where it was before you refilled it.

Step 2
Remove the cartridge from the printer and replace it with another old cartridge. Have the printer print an alignment page with this cartridge so it recognizes it as a different cartridge from the first one.

Step 3
Replace the second cartridge with a third one and run the same alignment page. Because the printer only retains the memory of two print cartridges, it will erase the memory of the first (refilled) cartridge.

Step 4
Insert the refilled cartridge into the printer. The printer will now recognize the cartridge as being full.

Step 1
Tape over the contact squares on the top left corner of the cartridge's contacts. Insert the cartridge into the printer and run an alignment page. Ignore any messages that might appear saying there is a problem with the cartridge.

Step 2
Take the cartridge out of the printer. Remove the tape from the left corner and tape over the contact squares on the top right corner. Place the cartridge back in and run another alignment page.

Step 3
Remove and reinsert the cartridge, this time with no tape on any of the contacts. Check to see if the printer recognizes the cartridge as being full.

Step 4
Repeat the above steps if the cartridge is still shown as being empty. This time, use the bottom corner contact squares instead of the top ones. If you are still unable to reset the cartridges, using multiple cartridges is likely the only way to do it.

How to Refill HP Inkjet Cartridges

Refilling inks can save more money than buying new one. It has the same quality as the branded ones.
Step 1
Make sure the surface you use is safe to possibly spill on. Cover it with paper towels or old rags that you don't mind getting toner on.

Step 2
Use a clean, non-medical syringe to insert the fresh ink into the cartridge. If you bought an inkjet refill system, this should be included.

Step 3
Locate the filling hole on the cartridge. It should be on the top or bottom and you often find it sealed with a ball bearing and a plastic film covering. Remove the covering with a penknife and push the ball bearing into the cartridge.

Step 4
Insert the correct color ink into the cartridge with the syringe. If you're refilling black ink, use about 20 milliliters. For color ink, use 10 milliliters per chamber.

Step 5
Reseal the filling hole if it is on the cartridge bottom. Make sure it's airtight. Squeeze the cartridge sides and insert the plug that should have come with the refill kit. A small amount of ink should drip from the print head.

Step 6
Let the cartridge stand with the print head down for a couple of minutes before putting it back in the printer. This will draw out excessive ink and equalize pressure in the cartridge.

How to Refill Canon Ink Cartridges

Ink jet printer cartridges are pricey to replace. Frequently replacing Canon cartridges can send you to the poor house in a hurry. Save a significant amount of money when you purchase ink jet ink and refill the cartridges yourself. In less time than it takes to go the store and purchase a new cartridge, you can refill an old one at home.

Step 1
Remove the old ink jet cartridge from the printer following the manufacturer instructions. Close the lid on the printer to keep it free from dust and debris while you are refilling the Canon ink cartridge.

Step 2
Locate the ink tank on the cartridge. Put a 3mm drill bit in a drill. Drill a hole in the top of the ink tank on the cartridge.

Step 3
Gently insert the needle on the bottle of ink into the hole you just drilled in the ink cartridge. Avoid squeezing the bottle until the needle is completely inserted in the ink tank.

Step 4
Squeeze the ink bottle gently to refill the cartridge. Fill the tank with a little at a time until the cartridge is full.

Step 5
Remove the needle from the ink tank. Wipe the top of the Canon ink cartridge off with a paper towel. Place a small piece of duct tape over the drilled hole. Rub the tape to remove air bubbles and to make sure it adheres to the cartridge.

Step 6
Put the refilled ink cartridge back into the printer. Clean the head of the printer by running the printer software and following the instructions for head cleaning.
